The Anxiety Challenge: PTSD Healing Negative Programming
By Jane Anthony BuckmanMany of us are programmed with negative beliefs such as "not being good enough", "not pretty enough", "not smart enough". . . .
Have you noticed how negative experiences have a more profound affect on you than all the positive ones you have experienced?
As children, we only have to hear, sense or experience criticisms a few times for it to impact heavily on us.
The negative programming can take hold in the subconscious mind at an early age and tends to stay there to be experienced over and over again.
These hurtful experiences and anxieties cause a shift in the Amygdala, a small organ deep in the subconscious mind. This shift in the organ determines how we process particular situations.
The subconscious is a very powerful part of us. It is responsible for over 90% of all human thought and function. It's role is to protect us and it actually does that very well. We, however, often manifest anxiety based on distorted information tucked in the subconscious.
Reactions can be severe. If the reaction is strong enough you will experience a full blown panic attack. Some common experiences are:
• Rapid heart beat, pounding heart or palpitations
• Sweating
• Shaking visibly or inside • Shortness of breath
• Inability to think clearly • Chest pain or discomfort
• Nausea
• Unsteadiness
• Feeling light-headed •
Depersonalisation (feeling outside yourself or like you don't exist)
Anxiety and fear connected to speaking in front of a group of people, for example, can cause the same kind of fight-or-flight response as that of being chased by a lion. A milder form of anxiety would be a disruption in your emotional body where it can be felt as excessive worry and tension, restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, nausea, fear, self-criticism, etc.
Once the negative beliefs that cause these reactions are established, they are very difficult to change. Some of you may know that standing in front of a mirror repeating affirmations to change a believe does little good because once you start saying "I feel confident," the critical factor of the conscious mind raises its ugly head and says "who are you kidding!"
So what is the answer?
I have found that Hypnotherapy, NLP and/or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to be a very effective remedy.
The deep relaxation of hypnosis slows the brain waves speed down from the everyday Beta pattern to the slower Alpha or Theta brain wave patterns. This slowing down often happens during meditation, reading an absorbing book, and as you fall asleep. When the brain wave pattern slows down, the door between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind opens enough for new positive information to enter and change the old programming.
Hypnosis is simply about making a change in the subconscious mind to realign with your conscious goal.
Once a positive suggestion goes into the subconscious mind to change the negative one, it has the power to change your self-concept and behaviors. This can be life transformative. (copyright)
